David Janssen had already played a wounded cop in The Fugitive; Harry O was his deliberate softer, sadder pivot. He demanded the limp be permanent, not cured for ratings.
The show's cancellation after two seasons—despite decent ratings—helped kill the wounded-detective subgenre until NYPD Blue resurrected it two decades later.
