Overview

AnimationHorrorScience Fiction

Hayato's home city is under attack from a gigantic robot. His parents are lying dead in the rubble and the only remaining friend is his dog. His only thought now is revenge against the owner of the Phantom Ship (from where the robot said he was sent). He ends up in the house of Kuroshio, the leader of the fight against the Phantom Ship and the most important person in the city. By complete accident, Hayato finds his way to an underground passageway where he realises that the true nature of events does not mesh with what Kuroshio has told him. His life is now in great danger, and only he can stop the plans of the evildoers.

Standout Aspects

Direction

Hiroshi Ikeda crams more twists into 60 minutes than most manage in two hours.

Practical Effects

Hand-drawn mechanical horror that predates Studio Ghibli's darker instincts.

Best for:Solo: Late-night animation archaeology for brave souls only.·Rewatch: Spot the visual precursors to Evangelion and Akira.
Heads up:Violence: On-screen parental death and child endangerment throughout.·Disturbing: The Haniwa cyborg design will visit you in dreams.

Trivia, insights & behind the scenes

Trivia

Shotaro Ishinomori wrote the original manga—yes, the Kamen Rider and Cyborg 009 guy, so the cyborg body horror pedigree checks out.

Cultural

This was Toei's attempt to compete with Tatsunoko's darker sci-fi; it bombed hard but became a cult object for anime historians tracking Japan's post-war anxieties about technology and authority.
