Two young girls are killed on railway by a passing train. It does not seem to fit the profile of a normal suicide. So if this is a double homicide who would do this and why? Martin Beck and his team start following the step backwards in order to figure out what has happened. With good and intensive police work they find man side trails from the main path.

Harald Hamrell
Trivia, insights & behind the scenes
Part of the legendary Martin Beck franchise that redefined Nordic crime fiction decades before 'The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.' Maj Sjöwall and Per Wahlöö's novels shaped an entire country's view of institutional failure.
Hamrell deliberately avoided showing the train impact — the 'silent scream' of the title refers to what's withheld from the audience, not just the victims. The horror lives in reaction shots, never spectacle.
