Practical Effects
Toothless puppetry makes CGI actually feel alive.
Cinematography
Flight sequences that'll ruin Avatar for you.
Acting
Gerard Butler's beard deserves its own billing.

Director
Dean DeBlois
Trivia, insights & behind the scenes
DeBlois directed the original animated trilogy and fought hard to shoot real locations in Ireland rather than pure volume stages.
This remake arrives as Hollywood's dragon obsession peaks—House of the Dragon, Dragon Age, and yet Toothless remains the blueprint for non-verbal character acting that makes audiences weep.

Reactions from the web
Mad respect to Universal Pictures for using real dragons instead of CGI like in animated movie. I hope everyone is safe during filming.

Dear Lord, I’m not for live action remakes, but every time I see promos and trailers for this movie, it brings me back to the days I was seeing this for the first time in a more grand away. Even though the animated trilogy will always reign supreme, I have full trust that these live action films will do the original trilogy justice! Every time hearing John Powell’s symphonies within these, it brings tears into my eyes…
