Nicolas le Floch, missioned by Louis the 14th to spy on the Duke of Chartres, who has his sights on the admiralty, witnesses the latter's cowardice in combat. He reports the facts to the king who nominates his cousin General of the light cavalry instead ... Le Floch has just made a mortal enemy out of him.

The series is adapted from Jean-François Parot's novels, and author Parot himself was a French diplomat who channeled his historical expertise into twelve Le Floch books.
This was France's answer to the British period detective boom, deliberately sexier and more politically cynical than its BBC counterparts—note how Nicolas sleeps with witnesses, suspects, and basically anyone in a corset.
