Trivia, insights & behind the scenes

Trivia

Freddie Bartholomew was MGM's highest-paid child star when he made this, earning $2,500 weekly—more than most adult contract players.

Cultural

The 'Boys Town' craze of the late 1930s made reform school redemption stories box office gold; this rode that wave with extra nautical flavor.
