Standout Aspects

Acting

Cagney's volcanic energy bouncing off Dailey's dopey charm.

Direction

Ford's action economy in WWI trenches, comedy elsewhere.

Best for:Friends: Bros night when you want bickering, not bombs.·Rewatch: Ford completists hunting his rare comedy misfire.
Heads up:Emotional: Sudden tonal whiplash to battlefield deaths in final act.

Trivia, insights & behind the scenes

Cultural

Ford made this as a favor to Fox to escape his contract—his heart was already at Monument Valley preparing The Searchers.

Trivia

The original 1926 film was banned in several cities for its 'unpatriotic' portrayal of soldiers; the 1952 version played it safe and sank.
