Trivia, insights & behind the scenes
This was the second Hillerman adaptation starring actual Native actors after decades of Hollywood brownface. Wes Studi had already played Leaphorn in 1991's 'The Dark Wind.'
The 'Talking God' pot that drives the plot was a real Anasazi artifact type, though the specific curse is Hillerman's invention. The Navajo Nation Film Office consulted on ceremony depictions.
