Dennis Quaid crashes Sesame Street to teach Telly that lies don't fly—even for monsters.

Sesame Street: Kids' Guide to Life: Telling the Truth (1997)

wholesome chaospuppet therapy90s nostalgia trip

Overview

Family

Telly feels left out when all the other kids at Gina's day care are going to the circus and lies that his uncle is a ringmaster. After Gina reads the story of "The Boy Who Cried Wolf," Elmo has a dream of the story where the boy learns his lesson. When Telly's uncle (Dennis Quaid) drops in for a surprise visit, Telly admits the truth.

Standout Aspects

Acting

Dennis Quaid fully commits to uncle energy opposite a monster.

Practical Effects

Elmo's fever-dream puppet wolf sequence is unhinged genius.

Writing

Classic fable remix that doesn't talk down to tiny humans.

Best for:Family: Parent-kid cuddle time with built-in conversation starter.·Kids: Ages 3-7 who fib about brushing teeth.·Rewatch: When your own kid starts lying about homework.

Deep Dive

Trivia, insights & behind the scenes

Trivia

Dennis Quaid filmed this during his '90s family-friendly era, sandwiched between Dragonheart and The Parent Trap remake. He reportedly improvised some uncle reactions to the puppets.

Cultural

This 1997 direct-to-video special was part of Sony Wonder's 'Kids' Guide to Life' series, essentially Muppet morality plays for the VHS generation before streaming made patience obsolete.
