Misconceptions (2010)

chaotic premiseculture clash comedyfaith vs. modernity

Overview

ComedyDrama

The story centers on a religiously conservative, married southern woman who receives a message from God instructing her to act as a surrogate mother and carry a child for two married gay men who live in Boston - a Jewish doctor and and African-American dance choreographer. All Hell breaks loose when the African American man comes to her home down south to micro-manage her pregnancy, and he won't leave.

Standout Aspects

Acting

Orlando Jones commits hard to an impossible role.

Writing

The premise is unhinged; the execution tries its best.

Best for:Streaming: When you want something weird and forgotten from the 2010s.·Friends: Drinking game: every awkward racial moment.
Heads up:Triggers: Clumsy racial stereotypes played for uncomfortable comedy.·Language: Homophobic slurs and religious condemnation depicted.

Trivia

This was director Ron Satlof's final film after decades of TV work including Matlock and Perry Mason.

Cultural

Released during the height of 'gay baby' panic in American politics, it accidentally captures a bizarre cultural moment when liberal Hollywood tried to solve homophobia with wacky pregnancy plots.
