Deep Dive

Trivia, insights & behind the scenes

Cultural

Port-Royal was the 17th-century French convent where Jansenist doctrine — predestination, human depravity, God's arbitrary grace — took root. Pascal wrote his Provincial Letters defending it; Racine was educated there. Dieutre treats this intellectual fortress as both unattainable and erotically charged.

Trivia

Eva Truffaut, appearing here, is François Truffaut's daughter — a ghost of French New Wave haunting a film about the impossibility of filming history.
