Standout Aspects

Acting

Gainsbourg's deer-in-headlights innocence is devastatingly precise

Direction

Blier's tonal whiplash between farce and horror

Writing

Dialogue that treats sex and death with equal casual cruelty

Best for:Solo: When you want to feel uncomfortably seen by French people·Streaming: Late night, slightly wine-drunk, questioning your entire youth
Heads up:Sexual Content: Explicit teenage sexuality, often with much older partners·Triggers: AIDS paranoia as central plot engine; era-appropriate homophobia
