Trivia, insights & behind the scenes
Based on Elie Wiesel's novel; Wyder filmed in black-and-white partly to evoke period newsreels and avoid 'pretty' period drama aesthetics.
Jason Isaacs accepted minimal pay and slept on set to maintain Dawson's exhausted vulnerability; the dawn scene took 17 takes because Basman kept genuinely weeping.
