The War on Democracy (2007)

uncomfortably honestradically angryarchive footage archaeology

Overview

DocumentaryHistoryWar

Set both in Latin America and the United States, the film explores the historic and current relationship of Washington with countries such as Venezuela, Bolivia and Chile. Pilger says that the film "...tells a universal story... analysing and revealing, through vivid testimony, the story of great power behind its venerable myths. It allows us to understand the true nature of the so-called "war on terror". According to Pilger, the film’s message is that the greed and power of empire is not invincible and that people power is always the "seed beneath the snow".

Standout Aspects

Direction

Pilger's unapologetic confrontational style — no both-sides nonsense here.

Writing

That opening quote hits like a brick through a window.

Editing

Jarring cuts between official denial and ground-level reality.

Best for:Solo: When you need to rage-process alone with your conspiracy corkboard.·Friends: Debate fuel for your most insufferable politically-aware friend group.·Streaming: Pause frequently to scream into a pillow.
Heads up:Disturbing: Archive footage of CIA-backed coups and civilian suffering.·Emotional: Witness testimonies from families of disappeared dissidents.
