Trivia, insights & behind the scenes
Jim Varney filmed this during breaks from his Emmy-winning Shakespeare in the Park run—yes, really. The man did Hamlet between Ernest movies.
This was peak Ernest mania: the character appeared in commercials, TV shows, nine films, and even had a short-lived Saturday morning cartoon. Varney reportedly spent four hours daily in makeup to become the character America couldn't escape.
