Vexille (2007)

mecha-dreadcyberpunk noiranime spectacle

Overview

AnimationScience Fiction

2067: Isolation: Japan seals herself off from the eyes of the world in the face of unilateral international policy setting strict limits on the use of robotic technology. The island nation exists only behind a veil of seclusion. No soul shall enter. No soul shall leave. 2077: Revelation: The veil is breached. Japan is infiltrated by agents of the organization S.W.O.R.D., a fighting force operating outside of the protection of the United States and her allies. Their mission: Determine if the Japanese are developing banned robotic bio-technology, forbidden due to its threat to humankind. In the battle between machine and man, humanity stands to suffer most.

Standout Aspects

Visual Effects

CGI cel-shading that still slaps harder than most 2024 releases.

Direction

Sori's camera worships machinery like it's religion.

Sound

Industrial score that sounds like factories having nightmares.

Best for:Solo: Late night absorption into its gloomy digital wasteland.·Streaming: Crank the bass and let the Sori visuals melt your screen.·Rewatch: Pause to admire the mechanical detail you definitely missed.
Heads up:Disturbing: Body horror via bio-mechanical fusion—think Tetsuo meets Terminator.·Emotional: Collateral damage includes an entire nation's humanity.

Deep Dive

Trivia, insights & behind the scenes

Cultural

Released during Japan's anxiety about losing manufacturing dominance to China, the film literalizes national techno-fear as literal body horror.

Trivia

Director Fumihiko Sori spent four years on this after Appleseed; the 'Dai-Guard' worm designs were rejected by Studio Ghibli years prior.
