This was one of the first full-length CG anime films, produced by Digital Frontier who later worked on Resident Evil: Degeneration. The motion capture was performed by actual actors, including a then-unknown Japanese model as Deunan.
Masamune Shirow's manga was already legendary for Ghost in the Shell, but Appleseed never broke through the same way—partly because this 2004 adaptation simplifies his dense political mythology into 'shoot guns, look sad, kiss cyborg.'
