Trivia, insights & behind the scenes
This was meant to launch a Mike Hammer TV series; Keach would play Hammer again in 1984's 'The Return of Mickey Spillane's Mike Hammer' and a syndicated series until his 1997 drug arrest halted production.
Spillane's Hammer was Reagan-era conservative fantasy: brutal, sexual, contemptuous of rights, always right. This adaptation softens him slightly — but only slightly.
