Trivia, insights & behind the scenes
Bornedal remade his own 2007 Danish hit for Hollywood in 2011 as 'The Substitute' with Lucy Liu. It tanked. The original's lo-fi charm survived translation about as well as Ulla's human disguise.
The alien language is actually backwards Danish. Bornedal recorded lines normally, reversed them, then taught actors to lip-sync the gibberish. Paprika Steen reportedly nailed it in one take because of course she did.
