This was the sixth on-screen pairing of Lemmon and Matthau, but their first since 1981. They made Grumpier Old Men two years later because the studio literally couldn't stop them.
The ice fishing rivalry spawned actual 'Grumpy Old Men' ice fishing tournaments across Minnesota for years. The state's tourism board never officially endorsed Grandpa's insults.
