One man. Ten killers. Zero chill. The yakuza revenge flick that doesn't waste your time.

Ootori 2 (2009)

relentlessgrittylean

Overview

The sole survivor of Tenchi-kai’s attack, Ootori (Hitoshi Ozawa) becomes a vengeful force. His target: the head of Tenchi-kai, Kido Tengai (Minori Terada). One by one, Ootori takes down the Tenchi-kai’s elite ten. Facing a massive criminal organization head-on, his fate hangs in the balance. Unyielding, his flame of revenge burns hotter as he risks everything to honor his comrades and uphold his code of justice.

Standout Aspects

Acting

Ozawa's thousand-yard stare could cut steel.

Direction

Tsuji packs a trilogy's worth of carnage into 71 minutes.

Practical Effects

Blood squibs and broken furniture, zero CGI cowardice.

Best for:Solo: Late night, whiskey optional, phone on silent.·Friends: With your friend who thinks John Wick invented revenge.·Rewatch: To catch which of the ten dies most creatively.
Heads up:Violence: Extensive yakuza-on-yakuza brutality, often with blades.·Gore: Practical effects that don't flinch from the mess.

Deep Dive

Trivia, insights & behind the scenes

Trivia

Hitoshi Ozawa was a genuine ex-bōsōzoku biker gang member before acting, lending his yakuza roles uncomfortable authenticity.

Cultural

Part of the early 2000s V-Cinema direct-to-video boom where directors competed to out-extreme each other on microscopic budgets.
