Trivia, insights & behind the scenes
The entire writers' room and most crew were Indigenous — a first for FX. Sterlin Harjo specifically hired locals from Oklahoma reservations as consultants and background actors.
The show's title references the real 'reservation dogs' — stray dogs on reservations — but also the kids themselves, stray and surviving together. The California dream mirrors actual Indigenous migration patterns during Relocation era policies.
