Overview

AnimationAction & Adventure

Dancougar - Super Beast Machine God is a super robot anime television series. The show ran for 38 episodes from 4 April 1985 to 17 December 1985 and was produced by Ashi Productions. Although the series was planned for 52 episodes, it was ended abruptly before a finale could be reached. Despite this, the series garnered enough popularity for the development of multiple OVA's. Juusenki Tai Songs featured music videos of the various theme and insert songs from the series to TV series footage. The 1986 OVA Requiem for Victims featured a recap of the television series and a newly-animated conclusion to the story. Additionally, there was a 1987 sequel OVA God Bless Dancouga. In 1989 the four-part Blazing Epilogue OVA series presented a new sequel.

Standout Aspects

Score

Insert songs hit so hard they got their own music video OVA.

Direction

Rushed finale somehow births four separate OVA continuities.

Practical Effects

Hand-drawn transformation sequences that eat half the budget per episode.

Best for:Binge: Commit to the OVA conclusion—don't stop at episode 38's cliffhanger abyss.·Solo: Late-night mecha melancholy when you want feelings with your explosions.·Rewatch: Spot the production cracks that somehow make it more lovable.
Heads up:Emotional: Abrupt cancellation leaves characters mid-arc; emotional whiplash guaranteed.·Violence: War trauma played straight, not cartoonishly—soldiers actually break.

Deep Dive

Trivia, insights & behind the scenes

Cultural

Dancougar pioneered the 'real robot soldiers piloting super robot' hybrid that Evangelion later weaponized.

Trivia

The 1986 OVA existed solely because fans mailed Ashi Productions actual letters demanding closure—a pre-internet crowdfunding of rage.
