Season 1 • Episode 24
LatestA alien ship is sighted approaching the sun, creating massive climate changes across the Earth. The Thunderbirds prepare to intercept the UFO, and face the ultimate challenge: the unknown.
Thunderbirds 2086 is a Japanese anime series loosely inspired by the original Gerry Anderson Supermarionation series Thunderbirds. The series was dubbed in English by ITC Entertainment, the original company who produced Thunderbirds, but is not officially recognised as part of Thunderbirds canon, due to the non-involvement of either Gerry or Sylvia Anderson. Despite this the English dub of the series contains music and sound effects from Anderson's series Stingray, Thunderbirds, Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons, Joe 90, UFO and Space:1999. A total of 24 episodes were produced, but only 18 were shown on Fuji TV in 1982.
Sound
Stolen Anderson sound effects create uncanny puppet déjà vu.
Production
1982 mecha design that aged like neon wine.
Direction
Hasegawa squeezing drama from legally distinct rescues.
Trivia, insights & behind the scenes
ITC dubbed it themselves using their own sound libraries, creating a weird loop where the 'fake' Thunderbirds sounds more 'real' than it should.
This exists in the fascinating grey zone of 80s anime adapting Western properties—like Macross/Robotech's chaotic cousin nobody invited to Thanksgiving.
