The show's alien-as-immigrant metaphor was directly inspired by UK border policies and the Calais Jungle refugee camp. Channel 4 greenlit it in 2015, peak 'hostile environment' era.
Fintan Ryan originally pitched this as a film; the six-episode structure was a compromise. Michaela Coel was cast before Chewing Gum exploded — this was her first major dramatic lead.
