This was NBC's desperate attempt to clone HBO's fantasy success during the peak 'prestige fairy tale' era—see also: ABC's Once Upon a Time.
The show was originally developed for 2013-2014 with a different cast and director, then completely rebuilt. The 'Say goodbye to Kansas' tagline became unintentionally prophetic when NBC killed it after one season.
