A Flower Blooming With God

Dec 23, 2012

Heike is astounded by the full extent of his Ogami's capabilities, as Ogami and Hitomi engage in a final showdown. Hitomi reveals why he had no choice but to carry out his plan, and swears vengeance against the Prime Minister. Sakura says her goodbyes.

Overview

AnimationComedyAction & AdventureSci-Fi & Fantasy

Sakurakouji Sakura is a girl who appears modest and graceful but in reality is skilled in martial arts. After witnessing a boy burning people with his blue flame, she is startled to see that the same boy is a transfer student, Oogami Rei. Oogami is a Code Breaker, one who does not exist. He is a seemingly cold-blooded killer who follows the principle of an eye for an eye, to use evil against evil. Convinced that killing is not right, Sakurakouji sets out to stop him and penetrate his icy heart.

Standout Aspects

Acting

Nobuhiko Okamoto's voice work makes Oogami deliciously unreadable.

Practical Effects

Blue flame animation genuinely gorgeous for 2012 budget.

Writing

Hitomi's arc hits harder than the main plot deserved.

Best for:Binge: Only 13 episodes—perfect for a Saturday anime marathon.·Solo: Nobody to judge your attraction to morally broken fire boys.·Background: Fights are pretty; plot is... there. Good folding laundry energy.
Heads up:Violence: On-screen burning deaths; Oogami kills casually and often.

Trivia

The anime covers only volumes 1-5 of the manga, which ran 26 volumes. Fans still argue whether the rushed pacing killed its potential or saved them from filler hell.

Cultural

Code:Breaker debuted in 2008's Weekly Shonen Magazine alongside Fairy Tail, but never broke mainstream—possibly because its 'government-sanctioned assassin teens' premise arrived after darker hits like Darker Than Black had already saturated that niche.
