The humans who can fight these demons are known as exorcists. Rin Okumura is a boy who bears the curse of being Satan's illegitimate son. His foster father sacrificed himself to save him from demons. To avenge his foster father's death as well as to prove himself, Rin decides to follow the path of an exorcist and defeat his own father, Satan. Trivia, insights & behind the scenes
Kazue Katō originally planned this as a two-shot manga; editor demanded serialization after seeing Rin's design. The anime outpaced the manga so badly they invented entire filler arcs.
The Vatican-as-military-complex satire hit different in 2011 Japan, where Christianity is exoticized and Catholic aesthetics are pure aesthetic fodder. Rin's tail and ears? Classic 'mark of the Other' trope from Japanese folklore, not Western demonology.
