Hitam draws on Indonesian folk horror traditions, particularly the 'pocong' and rural ghost stories, but subverts them by making the supernatural threat secondary to human complicity.
The 4-episode structure was deliberately tight — Sidharta Tata wanted to prove Indonesian streaming content could compete with K-dramas without bloat. The zombie outbreak mirrors real land disputes in rural Java.
