Trivia, insights & behind the scenes
NBC ordered 'James at 15' but premiered it as 'James at 16' — they'd already filmed episodes with the original title, forcing awkward voiceover changes. The network literally couldn't decide how old this kid was.
Creator Dan Wakefield based James on his own Boston adolescence; the show was pioneering in treating teen sexuality seriously, including James losing his virginity in a later episode — controversial enough to help get it cancelled.
