Vera Bergman was born on February 16, 1920 in Berlin, Germany. She was the daughter of the banker and diplomat Carl Bergmann. Vera was trained at the theater school of Max Reinhardt and became a member of the ensemble Deutsches Theater Berlin. After appearing in a feature film in Germany, "Es leuchten die Sterne" (1938), Vera Bergman left Berlin for Rome, Italy.
