Trivia, insights & behind the scenes
The film satirizes Spain's real tension between Los Reyes Magos (Three Kings Day, Jan 6) and encroaching Santa/Christmas commercialization. Belén's name literally means 'Bethlehem.'
Director Paco Caballero insisted on practical Krampus effects over CGI, hiring the same Spanish puppet studio that worked on Pan's Labyrinth. The result was so unwieldy that three puppeteers operated it in every scene.
