The Matador (2005)

Midlife Crisis NoirBromance with BulletsSleazy-Chic Energy

Overview

ComedyActionDramaThrillerCrime

The life of Danny Wright, a salesman forever on the road, veers into dangerous and surreal territory when he wanders into a Mexican bar and meets a mysterious stranger, Julian, who's very likely a hit man. Their meeting sets off a chain of events that will change their lives forever, as Wright is suddenly thrust into a far-from-mundane existence that he takes to surprisingly well … once he gets acclimated to it.

Standout Aspects

Acting

Brosnan's career-best performance—vulnerable, predatory, heartbreaking.

Writing

Dialogue that dances between cringe and poetry.

Cinematography

Mexico City as neon-drenched purgatory.

Best for:Solo: Late night when you're questioning your life choices.·Date Night: For couples who like their romance with existential dread.·Rewatch: Better every time you catch Julian's micro-expressions.
Heads up:Violence: Brief but jarring assassinations, played for uneasy laughs.

Deep Dive

Trivia, insights & behind the scenes

Trivia

Brosnan was so desperate to shed his Bond image that he took this role for scale and helped produce it. The mustache was his idea.

Insight

The film flopped in 2005 but found its audience on cable—it's essentially a feature-length exploration of what happens when masculine archetypes (businessman, assassin) collide and contaminate each other.

Just dropped here to see my favourite James Bond

I watch this movie once a year (Always in the summer for some reason 🤷‍♂️). A true hidden gem that never gets old. Maybe Pierce Brosnans best role.
