Trivia, insights & behind the scenes
This is a stealth remake of 1940's The Shop Around the Corner, which Ephron cheekily names Kathleen's store after. Jimmy Stewart's original was darker—Ephron made it capitalist propaganda with better banter.
The email voiceovers were recorded separately, and Hanks/Ryan weren't in the same room—making their chemistry even more impressive. Also that's Dave Chappelle as Joe's friend, because 1998 was wild.
