Riedau, an idyllic wine-producing village on the Hungarian frontier with Austria. Young Sandor is brought to the local police station by border guards during New Years' celebrations. Next morning he has disappeared without a trace. When Sandor is finally discovered by chance in the stations detention cell he has survived for 18 days, suffering a loss of memory.

Shot during the literal fall of the Iron Curtain, Eis captures Austria's uneasy reckoning with its own border violence—Hungarian refugees were routinely 'disappeared' by Austrian police through the 1980s.
Erwin Leder later played the killer in Angst (1983); Mittermayr cast him specifically for his ability to convey damage without dialogue. The detention cell was a real decommissioned border station.
