Master KIMs (2007)

slapstick chaosrivalry-coresmall-town fever dream

Overview

ComedyAction

The plot is instantly familiar in the great martial arts tradition, being set in a small town which is home to two rival masters, one who practices Taekkyun and the other Kendo, both of who just happen to be called Kim. As well as competing for students, the two are locked in deadly combat for the hand of the local beauty, who seems to be pretty much the only woman in town. Into their conflict comes yet another master Kim, this time a kung fu expert who puts them both to shame with his dizzying skills and suave charm. Eventually, real danger arrives in the form of some unscrupulous land developers, forcing the three to join forces for the greater good.

Standout Aspects

Practical Effects

Three distinct fighting styles actually performed by the actors

Stunts

Chaotic village brawl choreography that borders on Looney Tunes

Costume

Each Kim's outfit screams their personality louder than dialogue

Best for:Friends: Drunk movie night when you want zero brain cells required·Background: Folding laundry has never felt this action-packed·Rewatch: Catching every background extra who clearly isn't a stunt person
Heads up:Sexual Content: Yeon-Sil treated as literal trophy; dated gender dynamics throughout·Violence: Comedic bone-breaking that somehow never feels permanent

Deep Dive

Trivia, insights & behind the scenes

Cultural

Taekkyun, featured here, is a nearly extinct Korean martial art UNESCO recognized as intangible heritage—the film essentially weaponizes nostalgia for a dying tradition.

Trivia

The three leads reportedly trained in their respective arts for months; Choi Sung-kook's Taekkyun skills were so raw that masters on set initially thought he was mocking the form.
