Maine Road was Manchester City's stadium until 2003; the Gallaghers are lifelong City fans who later fell out with the club's Abu Dhabi owners.
This was peak 'Cool Britannia'—Tony Blair had just become PM, and Oasis were the soundtrack to a very specific, very brief moment of British optimism.
