Charlotte Colbert is primarily known as an installation artist; this was her first feature and she shot it while eight months pregnant. The peat bog sequences were filmed in actual freezing conditions that Krige insisted on doing barefoot.
The film was developed through the BFI's female horror initiative and directly responds to the missing witch trials context—Scottish 'witches' were mostly healers and widows, whose knowledge Colbert treats as suppressed female power finally erupting. Hathbourne's character is reportedly a composite of several real British film producers.
