Wandel based the film on her own brother's bullying, flipping the perspective to the powerless sibling who watches. The 4:3 aspect ratio isn't nostalgia — it's entrapment.
The school was a real working school in Brussels. Those are real children in the background, unaware they were in a film. Vanderbeque was cast after 200+ auditions.
