Trivia, insights & behind the scenes
Author Benjamin Alire Sáenz wrote the novel at 59, drawing from his own El Paso childhood and decades-late coming out.
The film quietly revolutionizes the 'gay teen story' by centering Mexican-American masculinity without trauma porn—Ari's father is loving but emotionally constipated, not abusive.

I will be watching this film alone, and I don't care if anyone/everyone sees me crying like a baby in the theater.

This movie is going to be spectacular, I can already tell. I think Reese and Max stole the show. They brought Ari & Dante to life in the most beautiful ways. ❤️
