Made for French television in 1986, this adaptation of Roger Martin du Gard's novel arrived during the cohabitation period between Socialist Mitterrand and conservative Chirac, giving its 1936 class politics uncomfortable contemporary resonance.

Yves Robert had already adapted Martin du Gard's 'Thibault' saga; this smaller-scale project let him reunite with Christian Clavier before the latter became a massive comedy star, showing his underused dramatic range.
