Rocksteppy (2017)

cringe-coreearnest disastersmall-town delusion

Overview

ComedyDramaMusic

Phil and Colin Beverly are two inept small-town brothers with big dreams, and a song-and-dance rock group to take them there. When they learn of a 'performance competition' in Austin, Texas called South by Southwest, they set out on a cross-country journey, followed by a camera crew of student filmmakers who document their quest to the top! The top of what, they have no idea.

Standout Aspects

Acting

Woodend and Dilley's committed awkwardness feels accidentally authentic.

Direction

Student filmmakers as diegetic camera — meta without being clever-clever.

Best for:Solo: Late night when you need to feel better about your life choices.·Friends: With cynical friends who love to roast delusional protagonists.·Rewatch: Cult status incoming — say you saw it first.

Deep Dive

Trivia, insights & behind the scenes

Cultural

The Farrelly Brothers' cameo nods to their own Rhode Island roots, grounding this in a specific New England delusion economy.

Trivia

Walter Day — the Twin Galaxies arcade referee from 'King of Kong' — appears as himself, confirming this exists in the same loser-hero documentary universe.
