Trivia, insights & behind the scenes
Part of a wave of 1980s Soviet films depicting Latin American revolutions, made when actual Soviet involvement in Nicaragua was escalating. The fictional countries let filmmakers avoid direct diplomatic awkwardness.
Director Latif Faiziyev was Uzbekistan's most prominent filmmaker; this was his rare foray into international espionage after specializing in historical epics. The weather control plot may have been borrowed from actual 1970s conspiracy theories about American cloud-seeding in Vietnam.
