Jesús de Galíndez was a real Basque diplomat who vanished in 1956; Trujillo's Dominican regime allegedly kidnapped him from NYC. The film was made by Argentine exiles in Spain during the Dirty War.
Banderas lied about his age to get cast and was paid in sandwiches. Kuhn smuggled the negative out of Spain disguised as commercial footage.
