Trivia, insights & behind the scenes
This 1928 'morality' tale arrived just before the Hays Code, when German cinema could still explore female desire without mandatory punishment — though it punished her anyway.
Director Hans Steinhoff later made Nazi propaganda films; here, his eye for glamorous suffering feels almost accidentally subversive.
