Standout Aspects

Acting

Elga Brink's face: desire, guilt, terror, no intertitle needed.

Cinematography

Riviera glamour vs. Berlin claustrophobia, all shadows and sunlight.

Best for:Solo: Late night with wine, contemplating why women always pay for desire.·Rewatch: Spot the acting — eyes say everything words cannot.
Heads up:Triggers: Blackmail coercion and implied sexual threat to a mother.

Deep Dive

Trivia, insights & behind the scenes

Cultural

This 1928 'morality' tale arrived just before the Hays Code, when German cinema could still explore female desire without mandatory punishment — though it punished her anyway.

Trivia

Director Hans Steinhoff later made Nazi propaganda films; here, his eye for glamorous suffering feels almost accidentally subversive.
