Trivia, insights & behind the scenes
Director Andrew Heckler spent 20 years trying to make this after stumbling on the real story in a 1996 New York Times article. The actual Redneck Shop finally closed in 2012, but the building still stands.
The film was shot in Clinton, SC, not Laurens, because the real location was too triggering for locals. Some residents of Laurens still defend the Klan's 'heritage' there today.
