Trivia, insights & behind the scenes
This was a TV movie-of-the-week for CBS, shot on a shoestring with mostly location filming in dusty California standing in for cross-country America.
Grodin was coming off 'The Heartbreak Kid' and leaned hard into his specialty: men who convince themselves they're decent while being quietly monstrous. Lasser had just left 'Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman' and brought that same unraveling energy.
