Trivia, insights & behind the scenes
Daniel Day-Lewis helped sew the New Year's Eve dress Reynolds works on, and learned to sew from the film's costume designer. He also wrote Reynolds' sister Cyril as a character, then suggested Lesley Manville.
The film is loosely inspired by British couturier Norman Hartnell and the obsessive, controlling relationships common in mid-century fashion houses. Reynolds' 'kiss me before I'm sick' line references Hartnell's actual habit.
