Trivia, insights & behind the scenes
Producer Merian C. Cooper created King Kong and specifically wanted Mighty Joe Young as a warmer, kid-friendly spiritual successor. Ray Harryhausen's stop-motion work here launched his legendary career.
The film quietly critiques its own existence: a story about exploiting an African 'wonder' for American entertainment, made by the same studio system doing exactly that. Joe's cage is the movie itself.
