Beautiful photography, great characters, deep emotions, breathtaking locations, wonderful story. A real masterpiece.

Saw this movie at theatre at age 15, and have never forgotten it. Fell in love with Chris Jones then, and when I was older, he still appealed to me the same way, just like Rosario Bratzi, and Marcelo Mastroianni.

This film was frowned on by the critics and public when it came out, and compared unfavourably to Lean’s previous epics. I have always loved it. Mitchum is a revelation playing against his typecast tough guy image. Also Howard playing the priest. The gun running scene is truly epic.
